Top 5 Songs with the Devil, Sports and Meeting Skeds
Good morning, Granbys! Today is Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012; there are 313 days left in the year.
Southington Patch Editor Jason Vallee consistently and frequently says that he wants to fight the Devil. Why, I have no idea. But hey, we all need hobbies. Me? I like fly fishing and watching baseball. Not as sexy as fighting the Devil, but it makes for a longer life expectancy, providing you aren’t casting in the River Styx.
Let the record reflect that if anyone can defeat the Devil, it’s Jason. Guy’s got, as the kids would say, “mad skillz.”
Anyway, Jason’s proclamation got me to thinking about my favorite songs with the Devil in them. Rock Roll being what, well, Rock Roll is, there is no shortage of material for my top 5 songs featuring Mr. Louis Cypher.
5. Shout at the Devil (Original Artist: Motley Crue) – Fact: these guys weren’t always a punchline, and Vince Neil didn’t always look like a bloated version of himself that was just pulled out of the Hudson River. This song still holds up after all these years.
4. Friend of the Devil (Grateful Dead) – How about a shout out to my man, Ken Lipshez and his favorite band. The song is about a weary sad sack pursued by the law.
3. Running with the Devil (Van Halen) – The original hit by Van Halen, which introduced us to Eddie’s blistering guitar and David Lee Roth’s, well, Devil-may-care attitude.
2. Devil Went Down to Georgia (The Charlie Daniels Band) – If you ever meet anyone who ever says that Country music can’t or doesn’t rock, play him or her this song. I mean, how many pieces can you recall that inspire you to play the air fiddle?
1. Sympathy for the Devil (Rolling Stones) – Arguably the best written song ever. Literate and clever, it’s everything that a rock song can and should be.
